Dear Herbalist,
It seems everyone I know is taking a tumeric supplement, but on one can tell me exactly why. What is Turmeric, and what is so great about it?
Thanks,
Totally in the dark about Tumeric in Telluride
Dear Telluride,
Your friends have obviously done their homework, even if they're not the best of teachers. Turmeric is a spice/ingredient in curry that has known COX2 activity (no human studies yet). Turmeric is a highly regarded spice used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditionally, turmeric has been used to improve gastrointestinal conditions, arthritis, and generally improve energy.
In addition, tumeric has been reported to possess antioxidant properties in vitro and in animal studies. A clinically proven dose of curcumin combined with whole organic turmeric provides a truly full spectrum product. As with many other plants, I believe that the medicinal activity of turmeric is a combination of several of its constituents. In addition to curcumin, turmeric contains turmerone which provides liver support and turmerin, an important antioxidant that is normally only available in whole herbs.
Hope that helps shed some light on this amazing and powerful supplement. Thank you for your question!
