There is a lot of debate right now as to which is more environmentally friendly: glass bottles for supplements, or plastic.
The idea that glass is always better stems from the fact that it is directly recyclable into other glass products, or even another glass bottle. Plastic, on the other hand, is "down-cycled", which means it becomes a different, usually "lesser" product when re-manufactured, such as carpet.
However, what this argument fails to consider is that the recycling of glass requires a great deal of energy. Considerably more than the recycling of plastic. Glass also weighs more, so costs more to transport. More gas. More emissions of fossil fuels. More water and energy to recycle.
It is not a cut and dried issue.
What are your thoughts? When buying supplements, do you take the bottle into consideration as well, and what do you decide?
